What to Pack for a Muay Thai Camp in Phuket

Packing for a Muay Thai trip is easier than most people think. Phuket is hot all year, you will sweat through everything, and you can buy most things here. Here is what is worth bringing, and what is not.
Training gear
- Gloves: if you have a pair you like, bring them. If not, you can buy good Thai gloves here.
- Hand wraps: bring two or three pairs. They need to dry between sessions.
- Shin guards: only if you plan to spar.
- Mouthguard: essential if you spar. Bring your own.
- Shorts: two or three pairs of training shorts. Thai shorts are cheap and easy to find.
- Tops: light, quick dry t shirts or vests. You will change after every session.
Clothes for the heat
- Light, breathable clothes for the day.
- Flip flops or sandals. You take your shoes off before stepping into the gym in Thailand.
- Something to cover your shoulders and knees if you plan to visit temples.
- A light rain jacket in the rainy season.
Recovery and health basics
- A refillable water bottle. You will drink a lot.
- Electrolytes. Easy to find here, but useful to have from day one.
- Plasters and tape for blisters on your feet.
- Sun cream and insect repellent.
- Any medication you normally take, with the packaging.
At Phuket King you will also have an ice bath, herbal steam room and dry sauna on site, so you do not need to bring any recovery gear.
Documents and money
- Your passport, with at least six months left on it.
- Travel insurance that covers sport. Check the small print for combat sports.
- A bank card that works abroad. Many places also take card and PromptPay QR payments.
- If you plan a long stay, read our guide to the DTV visa.
What not to bring
- Too many clothes. Laundry is cheap and quick in Phuket.
- Heavy jeans and jackets. You will not wear them.
- Brand new gloves you have never tested. Break them in first, or buy here.
